CHILDREN’S BOOKS

The appeal of writing children’s books is, I think, driven in part by a desire to help create a generation better than one’s own. Or perhaps simply better than oneself.

Snowboy Snowboy 1, 2, 3
A counting book in verse: one to ten and back again. It tells a simple story about the adventures of a snowboy and his friends. The charm is all in my wife Wendy Wahman’s illustrations. For Henry Holt and Company.

Wind Taken by the Wind
For this early reader I took some inspiration from our neighbors at the time, a White Christian couple who had adopted two children from Korea. The youngest, a girl, was getting to that age when parents can do no right. For The Wright Group.

Elephant How Big Is an Elephant?
Another early reader. In retrospect I think they simply wanted a “wow they’re big!” book, but I found the concept of bigness itself more interesting. It gave me a chance to do what I like: explain things. For The Wright Group.
